ROUNDUP: Gov. Kelly’s Balanced Budget Allows Kansas Universities to Hold Tuition Flat College Students Won’t See Tuition Hike this Upcoming School Year

TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly provided historic funding for Kansas schools, from early childhood education up to Kansas’ public universities. Thanks to her fiscal responsibility, many Kansas students have not seen tuition increases in the last few years. Governor Kelly believes that investing in our students’ education at all levels is an investment in Kansas’ future. Having a skilled workforce and educational opportunities will attract even more businesses to Kansas, keep our students in the state, and grow the economy.

Here’s what others saying about this support for Kansas students:

“On Wednesday, the Kansas Board of Regents voted to hold tuition flat at state universities during the upcoming school year, something they were able to do because of the historic level of funding provided by the budget Governor Laura Kelly signed in May.

As part of her budget, Governor Kelly restored university funding to pre-pandemic levels to enable state universities to freeze tuition and knock down barriers to higher education.”

“To make this possible, Kelly said she worked with the KBOR and state universities to secure $37.5 million which restores funding and freezes tuition. Additionally, she said she delivered over $1 billion in funding for higher education – a historic and unparalleled investment in state universities, community and technical colleges, and private institutions. The Governor said the investments will make post-secondary education more accessible for all Kansans and advance the Sunflower State’s economic prosperity.”

“‘The Regents are excited that students at state universities in Kansas will see no tuition increases next academic year,” said Kansas Board of Regents Chair Cheryl Harrison-Lee. “I’m thankful that Governor Kelly and the Legislature provided funding for flat tuition. Their partnership in this area, coupled with their support for increased need-based student financial aid, has helped us ensure affordability for Kansas families.’”

“This marks the fourth consecutive year the Kansas Board of Regents has approved flat tuition for undergraduate resident students at the University of Kansas. Emporia State University, Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Pittsburg State University and Wichita State University have had no undergraduate resident tuition increases in three of the past four years.”
