Gov. Laura Kelly’s Plan to Axe the Food Tax Headed to Her Desk for Signature
Thanks to Governor Kelly, Kansans will finally see relief at grocery stores across the state
TOPEKA – Governor Laura Kelly’s bipartisan plan to Axe the Food Tax is headed to her desk for her signature, a move that will save Kansas families hundreds of dollars a year once fully eliminated.
“Once again, Governor Laura Kelly is putting money back in Kansans’ pockets,” said campaign manager Shelbi Dantic. “This is a huge win for Kansans in every corner of the state who could use a little financial relief. In addition to cutting taxes for working families, axing the food tax will also protect small businesses and boost the state’s economy. Kansans’ grocery bills are about to be made cheaper thanks to Governor Kelly.”
The proposal reduces and eventually eliminates the 6.5% food sales tax in Kansas. Small businesses near the state border lose thousands of dollars every year from families crossing state lines for their grocery needs and to avoid this hefty tax. This will help make groceries affordable for Kansas families, helping to keep our businesses open and our money in the Kansas economy.
Kansans have been paying more for groceries than nearly every other state for years. Axing the food sales tax has been talked about for decades here in Kansas, but Governor Kelly was the leader who brought together both political parties and got it done.
Governor Kelly ran on this issue in 2018, calling for a cut to the food sales tax, and she kept her promise. It was the Governor’s continued leadership and bipartisan approach that finally made this possible.
