House Minority Leader Jim Ward (Wichita), former candidate for governor, today announced his support for Senator Laura Kelly for Kansas governor. Citing her strong commitment to schools and her unmatched understanding of the state’s budget woes, he endorsed her campaign for the state’s top office.
“I’m honored to have the support of House Minority Leader Jim Ward – a passionate advocate for working men and women,” said Kelly. “Jim fought to expand Medicaid even when Republican leadership refused to have the debate. And he helped lead the effort to end the Brownback tax plan and put our state back on track. I look forward to working together in the year ahead to invest in our schools, expand Medicaid, and rebuild Kansas for our families.”
Ward has represented the 86th House district in Wichita since 2003. He was elected House Minority Leader following the 2016 election. Read his full statement below:
“I have known Laura Kelly for years – as a colleague, friend and also rival – and there is no one better to lead Kansas at this pivotal time of recovery. Laura is the most qualified candidate running for governor, and she has proven she can work with Republicans and Democrats to advance meaningful legislation that improves the lives of all Kansans. Laura is the only candidate for governor who can rebuild our state and ensure that our best days are still ahead of us.
“Laura Kelly has dedicated her life to doing right by Kansas kids and families. When Sam Brownback made the largest cut to schools in state history – resulting in larger class sizes, cuts to classrooms, and school closings – she fought back.
“I’m also endorsing Laura because of her consistent support of women’s reproductive rights. Again, her voting history leaves no question about her commitment to ensuring women can make healthcare decisions with their doctor’s guidance, not politicians.
“Laura Kelly is exactly what Kansas needs after eight long years of crisis under Sam Brownback and Jeff Colyer. She will unite our state like no one else and turn the page on this dark chapter. We must come together and stop Kris Kobach and Jeff Colyer from inflicting four more disastrous years on our working men and women and their families.
“I ask Democrats to join me in voting for Laura Kelly for governor on August 7th. And I encourage all Kansans to support her on November 6th.”
