Citing her experience and unmatched ability to put Kansas back on track, budget expert Duane Goossen, endorsed Senator Laura Kelly for governor in a press conference at the capitol.
“Laura Kelly is the only candidate in this race – Democratic, Republican or Independent – who understands how to put Kansas back on sound fiscal footing and rebuild our state,” said Goossen. “I will be voting for Laura Kelly in August and November. I encourage you to join me.”
Goossen recently finished his work with the Kansas Center for Economic Growth where he served as the senior fellow providing critical expertise on the state’s budget crisis during the past five years.
“No one knows the Kansas budget better than Duane Goossen,” said Kelly. “And no one knows better than him what it will take to put our state back on sound fiscal footing so we can once again invest in our future. I am honored and humbled to have his support.”
Earlier in his career, Goossen served as state budget director for twelve years in the administrations of three governors – Republican Bill Graves and Democrats Kathleen Sebelius and Mark Parkinson, and received the National Association of State Budget Officers’ Gloria Timmer Award for career achievements in a state budget office
“I’ve worked closely with Laura for over a decade on the budget – through the Great Recession and the Brownback experiment,” said Goossen. “She is a steady, thoughtful leader who has the experience and knowledge to fix the mess Brownback and Colyer created.”
Goossen also previously represented Marion and Chase Counties for seven terms in the Kansas House of Representatives. Duane graduated from Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, and holds a master’s degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
“Laura Kelly fought to hold Sam Brownback and his Administration accountable for their damaging policies,” said Goossen. “Laura has been right at the center of the effort to get Kansas back on track financially, working across party lines to build the coalition that ended the damaging Kansas experiment.”
This endorsement follows last week’s endorsement by EMILY’s List, the leading resource for women running for public office. Also in March, Kelly was endorsed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger and several other prominent women.
“Laura Kelly is the right woman to lead the broad coalition of Kansans committed to rebuilding our state,” said Goossen. “She is the only candidate who can bring Kansans together around a vision for the future.”
